Kaleidoscope Finish for a Friend

July 26, 2011  |  Blog  |  Share

A quilt for a Starbucks experience. Working as a barista you tend to build relationships with your regulars, having their drink ready for them by the time they reach the cash register, looking forward to the daily chit chat and the way they would light up the coffee shop. Troy was that person, making friends with every barista and just being a joy to be around. Once I moved on, I honestly missed seeing my regulars, Troy included.

When I discovered that he was dying… that idea is still hard to think about, let alone type – I was in shock. He was experiencing liver failure (you can read all about it and visit his site here) and unless he had a transplant, he would be taken from this world far too soon. He was always in high spirits and when I spoke with him on the phone he sounded just like the Troy that would lift everyone’s spirits when he would walk into Starbucks every day. Soon, he could no longer work while he remained on a waiting list awaiting a liver transplant.

Luckily, an amazing friend underwent the rigorous tests and was a match. On June 6th, Troy got his new liver. He still has a long road ahead while he recovers and has since been in and out of the hospital, but there is hope.

I had intended from the moment I heard about Troy’s situation and struggles, to do anything in my power to help him. The original plan was to make some hand crafted items to donate so he could auction them off to help with piling expenses, but due to his recovery, it wouldn’t quite work out. I am forced to modify my original plans and take matters into my own hands.

I am raffling off this Kaleidoscope quilt, for my Starbucks buddy, Troy. It’s the least I can do for him for the countless days he brightened years ago. Please help me offer him some help.

A single entry will be $1. If you donate $10, you will get 10 entries and so on. I will draw a winner via random.org and cover the shipping expenses, including insurance and delivery confirmation. I will ship internationally. All money donated will be given to Troy to help with his mortgage, strata payments (aka, HOA), utilities, and medical expenses including lifelong prescriptions which are very expensive. He has been unable to work since March 2011 and is looking at another few months of unemployment as he recovers.

Quilt Stats:

Size – 46″x68″

Fabrics – Shade Garden, Kona Azure and Kona White

Batting – Warm & Natural Cotton Batting

Binding – Handsewn

If you would like to make a donation to be entered into the raffle, you can send donations to fabricdonkey(at)gmail(dot)com via Paypal with a note mentioning Troy’s name. You can track all the donations here. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I hope this quilt will bring a smile to your face the way Troy does to those around him.

Thank you Elizabeth at Don’t Call me Betsy for a fabulous quilt along!
