Happy Mother’s Day everyone! Does anyone have any exciting plans? As exciting as it sounds, I plan to grocery shop tomorrow.
I can’t really ask for more recently though because it’s been a rough period in my life and I’ve been taken care of and appreciated. That’s what it’s all about, right? Plus, I was already given the thoughtful gift of a heart with a picture of a fireman cute little girl on it.
With the help of my amazing friend, Bree, I’ve been working on a pattern for the chalkboard notebook I shared on the blog this year. The pattern has full instructions for two sizes and has plenty of pictures to boot to help you through. Naturally, this means that you will get a free copy of the pattern, and any updated versions if any changes are made.
If you are interested in testing the pattern for me, I would greatly appreciate it. The only small catch is that you must have chalk cloth readily available to you because of time constraints. I would prefer testers that fit this criteria:
- Must have the project completed by Saturday, May 19th.
- Must communicate any problems you encounter so I can update the pattern, if necessary.
- Have a blog and share the book you create, citing the origin of the pattern.
- Can take quality pictures that I can use as examples in the promotion of this pattern.
Please e-mail me at fabricdonkey(at)gmail(dot)com if interested and I will e-mail you the pattern as soon as possible.
As exciting as this is for me, I will hopefully have more exciting news to share with you all in the near future. Have a wonderful Mother’s Day guys!
My wonderful friend Bree, from Distant Pickles, has two tutorials up this week at Riley Blake’s Cutting Corners College. The pin cushion is genius and useful and the Warden’s Cross quilt is gorgeous (I’ll definitely be making one). Check them out and maybe show Bree some love at Distant Pickles.
Thank you again so much for sending in all the awesome tips!
Congratulations Tina. Please check your e-mail.
This past weekend has been horrendous and has left me absolutely tuckered out. The Queen of the “Anti-Napping Organization” even gave in and succumbed to a 90 minute nap. That’s just insanity right there. You have no idea how much I loathe napping people (my husband probably secretly resents me for this)… at least those napping around me. And no, that doesn’t include napping children. They can nap away.
I spent the last two days helping clean and set up a new aerial gym. I have mentioned taking aerial classes before, and for those that don’t know, it’s a kind of circus school. Now don’t go imagining clowns and circus. Think more Cirque Du Soleil and tissue, hammock (hellooo Pink’s Grammy performance a few years ago) and trapeze etc. Today I volunteered my services for over 7 hours and I vacuumed, and I kid you not when I say I vacuumed for 2 hours trying to get the mats clean. I was happy to see people taking notice and dusting off their shoes before walking on *cough* my mats. I also got to paint, help move things, let the little girl burn off some energy, and set up my own corner in the shop.
Whaaa?
I’ve delved into making and selling some things locally. Perhaps it will expand to an online shop, but for now, it’s really cool having my own little corner in a shop. I snapped a quick picture after I set up my area. Please excuse the quality of the cell phone picture. My items are in the top box on the left (see Prince Charming staring out at you?) and the softest, cuddliest blankets plus a notebook I haven’t shared yet. Look for that on WIP.
I’ll leave you on a happy note. I’m working on something I’m excited to share with you in the coming week or two. More about that later.
PS – I do realize we’re due for another tip-based giveaway. I will draw a winner this week. Thank you for all the tips – you guys are the best! Keep them coming.
So, it figures that I’m done with the time consuming Geology course and I’m in rare form, peaking creatively and having the motivation to keep going, when I remember that my machine needs to be serviced. It’s been a year already.
I’ve also been reminded that I’m not a list person, as much as I’d love to be. I vaguely recall what this last week should have involved making, but let’s just say I got side tracked. I was productive though and I have some goodies to share!
Actively Working On
This is really going to involve doing all the cutting for the projects I’d like to work on. I don’t know what I’ll be in the mood to work on so I’ll be cutting out baby blankets, cutting the pieces for my Sweethearts quilt, notebook covers, clutches and maybe even working on the waldorf doll I tossed aside in frustration months ago. In a perfect world, I’d like to work on the hand quilting on my very first quilt that’s still incomplete, but I won’t get ahead of myself.
On Hold
Pretty much everything else is on hold right now.
Completed
I made this notebook holder out of some of the fabulous Prince Charming fat quarters I picked up from a recent sale at Paper Thread Fabrics. I paired it with Essex linen and included a notepad, pink leather notebook, a matching pink pen and some hidden pockets, just for fun. I also used a vintage button from one of my mother’s dresses from her teenage years.
I did make the clutches I planned on making last week.
Success!
I was struck with the idea of making several drawstring bags to organize my daughter’s room. (I used the fabulous tutorial by Jeni at In Color Order.) I dove head first into my stash and cut into my Essex linen and paired them with cute prints. I worked feverishly and got the bags done. I just haven’t decided on what drawstring to use. Do you think I should use white since all the bags are lined with white? Or perhaps buy some cord? I can’t decide. For now, the colors and prints make me happy. The best part is my daughter has generously offered to share her bags with all her friends… after she got into the bags and had her own potato sack race.
Linking it up with Lee again!
… and Wednesday has snuck up on me yet again! Let’s get down to business on this extra day of the year!
Actively Working On
Parisville Quilt – I need to baste this which involves removing my Dr. Seuss quilt off the basting boards. Eep.
Baby Blankets – If I have some downtime between other projects, I’ll fit one of these in. I adore the prints I have.
Sweethearts Quilt
Clutch Purses – Three words – Joel Dewberry’s Ginseng. *swoon*
New Projects
Knitting bag for my Mama. <3 We picked out this beautiful Echino print together and I found this Kaufman Essex linen in lime at $3/yard locally which is just the perfect match. I’m hoping to pair it with these awesome leather handles I also picked up at Superbuzzy.

PIFs – I know exactly what I’m making. I just need to make them.
Completed
I made the softest, cuddliest blankets out of double gauze fabric that I picked up at Superbuzzy and fuzzy backing that was also purchased locally. I wish I had taken a picture, but my daughter grabbed it and snuggled up in it – she’s not a blanket snuggler. It must be especially soft.
I also completed my daughter’s notebook that I was working on. I’m so excited about how it turned out. She loves it and clutches it to her chest. She even took it shopping with us and was excited to write while in the car. I pray that her enthusiasm toward it and life doesn’t fade.
I also cut out the 10″ squares for Distant Pickles’ Rainbow Layer Cake Swap. I can’t wait to see this colorful layer cake! Here are my colour assignments (Deer Valley and Anthropology prints)-
Last, but not least, I completed my condensed 8 week crash course in Geology. It took a lot of work and frustration, but it feels great to be done with and having that hard work pay off. (< That’s my perfectionism kicking in…) That was my biggest accomplishment this past week.
Here’s a close up of what the past two months has been for me.
Don’t rock looks cool?!
Tagging along with Lee at Freshly Pieced. Go check out the fun.
I know there’s no need to explain, but life recently has been in-sane. Between school and our car spontaneously breaking down, then having a weekend full of disorder and no sleep, I’ve been pretty worn out. Over the past couple weeks, I did make progress on projects that I wasn’t able to share with you.
Actively Working On
Parisville Quilt
My daughter’s robot notebook – I finally decided on the embroidery and it’s been slow going because a – she is helping me (which is adorable) and b – the car broke down right when I started working on it and I had to pick up my stranded husband.
Baby blankets – There’s a few in the works.
New Projects
Today I decided to start working on a quilt using Sweetheart fabric that I got for a steal during Missouri Quilt Company’s daily deal. A charm pack was just 1 penny! I managed to find coordinating prints. Naturally, I got a steal on both, but especially the purply-red that is an organic Kaufman cotton and cost $4/yard. Yum.

I made two adorable clutches. One was for a recent giveaway and the other I used at a work party.
I also completed a project I started a while ago. I don’t know what I’m going to do with it, but it was fun creating it.
(More about that precious pink donkey later…)
I’m linking up with Lee, as usual. Go get inspired.
Thank you for the birthday wishes and quilt pattern submissions, especially those sent in by my international readers. <3
The winner of the clutch is Karen J! She sent in this picture frames quilt by Little Miss Shabby. I plan to make it with a bit of a twist. Unfortunately I can’t start on it soon because of all the other projects on my plate, but I plan to at least start it by the end of the year.
Have a great rest of the weekend everyone! I’ll be slaving away with Mr. Donkey in the garage today.
I mentioned going out every weekend on hikes and geocaching before and that’s just what we did on Martin Luther King Jr Day. We’re fortunate to have national parks around us which means awesome long trails. We did 13.5km and in a desperate move to get a cache that was out of the way, Mr. Donkey proceeded to leave the path and do his best Michael Flatley impression. He sashayed through poison oak/ivy, ran down a 15 ft deep ravine, traversed a stream (or “river”) and climbed out of the ravine on the other side, all while trying not to do a face plant in said stream. He then climbed over some boulders, and emerged victorious, having found the elusive cache.

Ironically, we were just 100 ft from a side path that would have taken us straight there, but I’m sure he found it much more enjoyable emulating Michael Flatley. He already does channel him at home, but this was his river dance in his finest hour.
I’m bothering telling you all this because in this secluded area, we found this -
If I were a squirrel, these nuts would be my fabric stash… ‘cuz I just can’t get enough, dundun.
Don’t forget to send in your quilt suggestion for a chance to win this adorable clutch!
Updated picture with one of two prizes you could win!
I’m turning ONE!
A year ago my husband encouraged me to pursue something I feel passionate about in a way that would hopefully help others. I decided to go for it and figured if anything, despite start up costs, it would give me something to do for myself and it would be a totally new experience. It was fun sitting in bed figuring out how to put together a site, scrapping the entire thing and crying miserably over it and starting all over again. I remember itching to go live because there were some amazing deals and I couldn’t share them with anyone yet. I remember discussing names and giggling uncontrollably when we came up with “Fabric Donkey”. I never thought I’d be happy to refer to myself as a “work mule” or an “an ass”.
A year later, I can say that I am so glad he encouraged me to do it. I have “met” so many amazing bloggers and company owners. I have been further exposed to the sewing world and I love that I can honestly say “I can sew” now. I still find it funny when someone calls me The Donkey.
Now, this wouldn’t be any fun if it didn’t mean something for you too, right? I normally give out fabric because of the main purpose of this site, but I want to spice things up and hand out a handmade good. Because we’re spicing things up, we’re going to go ahead and spice up how you enter as well.
When I first got into the quilting world, I jumped all over a deal at The Missouri Quilt Company for a mystery honey bun. I received Arcadia and instantly fell in love. That’s when my quest for Arcadia began and I managed to snag two layer cakes at a steal and was later accidentally shipped a honey bun that was destined for someone in Canada in addition to my order. After resolving that mistake by paying for it (to save the seller additional shipping costs), I became the proud owner of two honey buns and two layers of Arcadia. Unfortunately I was never able to get my hands on any Arcadia yardage.
This is where you come in. I cannot, for the life of me, decide on a quilt pattern for it. I constantly waver and that is why the precuts are still sitting on my shelf 2 years later. The one thing I have decided is that I would like to make a queen sized quilt for our bedroom. Bonus if I can squeeze a crib sized or larger quilt out of any remnants. Come to think of it, I’d like some pillows too. But I digress…
In order to steer you in the right direction…
- I do not like quilts simply made out of squares sewn together. Ie, charm or layer cake squares just sewn together to create a top.
- I’d like to be able to see the prints and not chop everything up into tiny pieces. I’d like to showcase the fabrics.
- For this quilt, I’m not feeling the squares within squares blocks either.
- I like modern quilts. Now I’m going to go hide in a corner because I don’t know if that’s wrong to say or if I’m defining it correctly (I seem to recall some debate in blog land). Let’s just say I don’t mind abstract or simple quilts.
I do love this quilt at Sew With Sass, but I’m wary of using almost all the fabric on just a single top. Yep, I’m a hoarder.
Rules
- The winner will be chosen by yours truly.
- You can send in up to 5 patterns for me to consider.
- Please send them to FabricDonkey (at) Gmail (dot) com.
- I’m sorry, but this time I will not be able to ship internationally. Thank you for understanding.
- I will accept entries until Friday, January 27th.
It’s a new year and a lot has happened since my last lonely WIP post. I’ve been busy, busy, busy, but I managed to get a fair amount (for me) done despite that.
Actively Working On
The Parisville quilt. It’s for my daddy, and yes, it was supposed to be complete last month. I couldn’t do it with other deadlines creeping up on me and I visited him almost empty handed. I will finish it and I know he’ll love it, even if it’s late. The quilt top is complete and the simple backing (for the sake of completing it on time – so much for that!) is in two pieces on the back of my cute refurbished onion chair.
My daughter has been seeing me make things she loves go out the door, so it’s time to make her something. The realization dawned on me recently that I hardly make anything that actually stays in my house. Anyway, what it is going to be is a surprise, but here’s the outside. She’s in love.
Does it count as on ongoing project if it’s technically finished and just needs to be hanged? Yeah. My secret copper wire and glitter project is almost in its new home.
New Projects
I would like to make my own clutch purse for an upcoming work dinner so that’s my newest project. It will be made using Parisville fabric. It looks great in my head. We’ll see how it turns out.

Now, the fun part!
My mother in law’s gift was completed and sent out in time for the holidays. I hope she liked it.
I loved it so much that I had to make a non-Christmas version of it. I picked up two Ghastlies prints because I fell in love with them when I saw them, despite not really being into holiday fabrics.
An old friend of mine recently got married and I was able to give them their wedding gift in person on Sunday. This is what I came up with. I can assure you that I will be making more swoon blocks in the future.
And finally I made a cute little drawstring bag to hold all of my daughter’s hats. She’s a hat fiend.
I’m glad to be linking up with Lee at Freshly Pieced again! Check out what other bloggers have been up to since the holiday break.
I did say I was going to strive for “betterment” this year. I’m failing already.
After our hike today, my husband was complaining about the cramps in his legs. I asked him to stretch and he half heartedly did it then quickly gave up. He mentioned a massage being a good idea later. Trying to be a good wife, I proceeded to massage his back. He felt very hot, so after cracking his back and massaging for a few minutes, I open up the door, then proceed to massage his lower half.
I think I’m doing pretty well at this point, but I instead hear…
“This is hell!”
“It’s like winter outside! It’s frigid out there!” (Remember, we’re in Southern California – it’s never that cold.)
“Oh, the pain! This isn’t pleasurable at all! This is agony!”
“Please, for the love of God! Just stop!”
How do you think I did?
With that, come a few changes for this Donkey. The biggest change is that I’m back in school. To ensure I didn’t convince myself to put it off, school started January 2nd. How’s that for keeping a new year’s resolution? I’m the proud online student of a geology class with the coolest shipment you will ever receive as far as class materials go. I not only got textbooks, but I got a box of rocks! Exciting, no? I’m excited to do my lab work with the help of my 3 year old daughter. That’s not cheating – at least I don’t think it is, haha.
I’m exploring the world that is preschools. This has quite possibly been one of the most stressful things I’ve been dealing with. It really is hard putting the most precious thing in your life in someone else’s hands. And it makes your heart bleed when they aren’t taken care of to your standard. I’m hoping for security and a lot of learning and growth this year for the both of us.
My husband and I have been making a point of going out hiking every weekend. It all started on Happy Downton Day (or Christmas Day, if you will). It’s been a great way to bond outside of the house, away from computers, with our daughter, to get exercise in (though that isn’t the main point of it, but a lovely perk with the 10+ mile hikes!) and to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds us here. It helps that we’re also playing a bit of a game; a type of treasure hunt. My daughter thinks we’re pirates going out treasure hunting, Arrrr Matey. We go out geocaching which really is a real life treasure hunt. You get coordinates that you enter into your GPS and sometimes you will be offered clues to help you locate a container of some type. Sometimes you can trade treasures, which is awfully exciting for the 3 year old. Who am I kidding? The adults love it as just as much in our case. Does anyone geocache at all? If so, you may be interested in something I’ve got in the works. I’ll be blogging more about geocaching soon.
A blog post at The Intrepid Thread got me thinking about my word for the year. It’s betterment. I don’t really do new year’s resolutions, but I do like setting smaller goals for myself. I feel “betterment” can be applied to all aspects of my life. I want to organize my craft area (and keep it nice and tidy!), to increase my knowledge on different subjects, try something new, get better at aerial skills and reach out to those I love and let them know that I’m thinking of them.
And just because this gem spewed forth from my husband’s mouth after reading over my shoulder… Hey girl, you don’t need no betterment in my eyes – you couldn’t possibly get any better. I left the grammatical error in there to stay true to his words.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check this out for a good laugh.
I’m planning a few other things that I’m keeping under wraps for now, but I can’t wait to share them with you! I hope you’re having a wonderful start to the new year!
I just wanted to wish you all a happy holiday and a wonderful new year! For you Downtown Abbey fans out there, HAPPY DOWNTOWN DAY!
Has anyone given any thought to their new year’s resolutions? I have some plans, but I’ll fill you in soon. Take care and be safe. <3
I am simply overwhelmed by all the responses. I have copied over every single comment so I have a nice compilation of shows and books – thank you! We don’t have cable here either, but it’s wonderful getting sucked into a great show and taking a break once in a while when I’m not devouring a book.
There were a few of you who asked about where I got the Olivia stockings panel. I found it at Fabric Shack on a trip to Ohio. It’s by Ian Falconer for Andover fabrics.
I won’t keep you waiting any longer. Here are the winners!
First prize winner for the Outfoxed bundles is…
Congratulations Colette, who said “My favorite book of all time is Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. As for the TV series I’d have to say Big Bang Series because I am a geek at heart. “
Second prize winner for the Parisville jelly roll…
Congratulations Karen, you said “My favourite tv series and book is Pride and Prejudice.”
And lastly, your third prize winner for the adorable Olivia stockings panel…
Congratulations Kristin Orth, who said “My favorite TV show is Grey’s Anatomy, and my favorite book is anything by Jonathon Kellerman. “
I will be e-mailing you all for your shipping information.
This giveaway is now closed and winners have been drawn and announced. Congratulations Colette, Karen and Kristin!
Welcome and thank you for stopping by Fabric Donkey! I know you can’t stay long so the long story is this – Fabric Donkey is a site I created to tell you all about the best fabric deals on the internet. There is no paid advertising to post about any deals, so it’s truly what we think is the best deal at the time. If you’re looking for something, I can deal hunt for you too. You can find free shipping and coupon codes here, deal updates on the home page, chances to win fabric here, and random bits of my life on the blog.
This is my second time hosting a giveaway (international participants welcome!) and I’m so excited to be sharing some of my favorite fabric lines with you. This time, Fat Quarter Shop, the store that truly has it all, has generously agreed to give away the Wisely and Cleverly Outfoxed fat quarter bundles by Lizzy House! (Can I admit I’m jealous of you all?)
Some of my followers will know that I’ve been working on a Parisville quilt for my father, so I thought I’d share a jelly roll of this gorgeous fabric.
And because it’s just about Christmas, I couldn’t resist picking up this fun and adorable Olivia stocking panel.
I did try to use Rafflecopter, but it’s not cooperating, so we’re going to have to do things the old-fashioned way. Sorry!
Leave me a single comment with the following. If you do any of the extra entries, please include them in your one comment.
Mandatory - Leave me a comment telling me what your favorite TV series and book are.
Example – My favorite TV series is Downtown Abbey (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re rally missing out!) and my favorite book is Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

I’m the 99% and I post anyway. In case you’re wondering, WIP Wednesday is on hiatus and of course I realize this after I post.
I feel like I’m reporting to duty as I type this in my utterly exhausted state at a few minutes shy of midnight.
Actively Working On
I was hoping I’d be able to say that I completed the Parisville quilt top, but alas, I have not. I’m nearly there and if it weren’t for my aerial class tonight, it would be complete. Ah well. C’est la vie. Instead, you get to see it prettily laid out with Hidden Mickeys and friends. May the force be with you. These are not the fabrics you seek. Hail, inner geek and creative late night photography.
New Projects
Since I cannot, for the life of me keep up with a list of things to do and randomly find myself with new projects on my plate, here are two completely spontaneous projects that I am now actively working on.
I decided I would create a little something for my mother in law. Can I just say I love Kate Spain? I’m not a fan of Christmas fabric (insert *gasp* and “blasphemy!” here…) but Kate Spain makes me like it and enjoy working with it for a change. I’ll have more to show you next week. I hope.
This is my top secret project. I found inspiration from something my father made my siblings and I as children. The difference is I’m instilling the help of pink glitter. My daughter is happy.

*Whew* That took just about 20 minutes, in case you were wondering.
… until Sew, Mama, Sew! Giveaway Day!
Be excited. Very excited.
Multiple Winners. Lizzy House. Tula Pink.
Need I say more? See you back here next week!
I’m happy to report I made quite a bit of progress last week. (Does it really matter that all that progress was a single work’s day?) My father’s, assuming I can bare to give it away, hehe, quilt is coming along beautifully. I’m in love. So is he.
The pattern, Sweet Garden by Carolina Patchworks, is just perfect for showing off the fabrics in Parisville. This particular block would make a great pillow too. I might just toss in a pillow for my dear father too. I’ve got just one strip left to make and the top will be done.
Any ideas on what thread you would use to quilt it? I’m stumped so far.

Congratulations Marika! I will be contacting you for your shipping information.
We will be giving away a Beads charm pack by Free Spirit for Westminster Fibers for the next round.
By getting free fabric, of course! It’s time to give away something for our tip based giveaway. Thank you for sending in great deals to help everyone out. I realized I never specified what I’d be giving away, so I’ll be raiding my giveaway stash when I get home. Stay tuned.
I just came back into town after being away for two weeks and what do I do? Spontaneously decide to purchase a sewing chair off of Craigslist and reupholster it all in a single evening. It was rather dilapidated and needed serious attention. I discovered the seat cushion had been redone twice, so I removed each layer, revealing all the layers of this onion. Apparently chairs are like ogres in this regard.
I still need to sand it down because I’m not a fan of the overly glossy finish, but it looks fabulous in my sewing corner right now. I have a purple velvet cushion on top and I love how it pops against the mod circles.
Onto my real works in progress, aka, projects I have been working on for longer than a single evening…

Parisville quilt for my father. You may recall he had a quadruple bypass surgery and I wanted to make something personal, so a quilt naturally came to mind. It will also keep him warm now that he constantly feels cold while he recovers.

Happy Halloween everyone!
Are you going out to Trick or Treat tonight? Or did you participate over the weekend? Feel free to add a link to your family’s costumes in the comments. I’d love to see them!
I need to do more of that right now and I have a feeling all of you can use a reason to smile right now. It’s been a hard week here for a few reasons, the biggest being that my father underwent quadruple bypass surgery. I had to remind myself to just breathe and pray for the best. He is in recovery, *whew* and we’re all hoping for a quick and easy recovery. Well, as easy as that sort of recovery can get.
Back to smiling. What makes you smile? Perhaps your child, seeing a friend, receiving a parcel in the mail bursting at the seams with fabric… Something small that brought a smile to my face while I attempted to keep myself occupied as I waited hour after agonizing hour (for a total of 7 hours!) to hear the results of my dad’s surgery, is this.

Precious, no? I just love the Japanese cotton/linen blend. I picked this up at Superbuzzy which happens to be local! That’s a very, very, dangerous store; even more so when it’s easily accessible. Eeep.
I used the tutorial by Val at Distant Pickles and modified it to better suit my needs.
Why else does it make me smile? Because it’s not staying here. It’s going to a new home and I hope it’s new owner adores it and smiles when they see it.
I’d love more reasons to smile so tell me something that made you smile, or something you did to bring a smile to someone else’s face. Have a great weekend everyone!
I’ve been keeping Mr. Random.org busy today. We have a winner for Cauldron Crafts. Thank you to those of you who supported our (Bree from Distant Pickles and Fabric Donkey) first month long affair, full of tutorials, guest posts, projects and awesome discounts from Stitches N’ Giggles, Fabric Shack and Quilting Creations International. We would like to especially thank Riley Blake Designs for providing us with the fun Doodlebugs Trick or Treat fat quarter bundle to give away.
With that being said, your winner is…
Congratulations, Val! Please contact Bree at distantpickles at yahoo dot com with your shipping information.
Thank you so much to everyone who participated and shared their projects with us.
We hope you enjoyed Cauldron Crafts.
